Tech Algebra: A Statistics Study

State of Origin:
Virginia

Subject Area: Algebra, Statistics

Grade Level: 9-12

Objective(s)

Students will collect data from Internet and graph using a box-whisker graph and stem-leaf plot.

National Standards

Technology: use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.
Mathematics: (5) interpret data using methods of exploratory data analysis.

Summary

In this lesson, students will use the Internet to search for data--30 or more values. With that data, students will interpret and graph using a box-whisker graph and a stem-leaf plot.

Technology and/or Materials Needed

  • Computers with Internet access
  • Calculators (optional)
  • List of websites or website directory
  • Prerequisite: searching skills, knowledge of graphing

Implementation Time Frame

Three-four 45-minute class period

Activities

This lesson should follow a unit on statistics where students have been taught different types of graphs including the box whisker graph and stem leaf plot. This may be used as a culminating assignment or additional assignment.

Students will use the Internet to gather at least thirty pieces of data. A list of possible websites may be provided as well as a website directory. Also, examples of possible data can be shared, such as the number of NBA rebounds by the top thirty players, weather temperatures around the globe, or the MVPs' number of homeruns for the past thirty years. Students should be encouraged to search for data that interests them. You should circulate while the students are collecting to the data to discuss with them whether the numbers are feasible and/or realistic to work with for this project.

Once they have collected the data, they can print out the list or write down the data set. The next step is to create a box whisker graph(s) and a stem leaf plot(s). They should also include the calculations of mean, mode, median, and range. Finally, each student needs to complete a written summary and conclusion of this data, describing how they found the data and what the graphs are displaying.

Assessment

Students may be assessed for accuracy using point values:
Data collection=5 points
Box whisker graph=15 points
Stem leaf plot=15 points
Conclusion=15 points
Total=50 points
