Chanukah Scavenger Hunt

Students will complete a Chanukah scavenger hunt using resources from the Internet.

Students will use the Internet to research Chanukah historical information.

Technology and/or Materials Needed

  • Computers with the Internet access
  • Diskette for each student
  • Previous Internet searching experience
  • Knowledge of how to save information from the Internet on a disk
  • Chanukah Scavenger Hunt reproduced for each student

Implementation Time Frame

Two 45-minute class period

Activities

Pass out the scavenger hunt to each student. As a group, with students at individual computers or working in pairs, launch the Internet and go to the search engine, Alta Vista. Type in "Chanukah" in the search field and press enter. In the list of hits, students will look for "Graphics by Celeste". Click on the link and go to the site. Search for a Chanukah graphic and save the image on a disk. Click on the back button to return to the search results.
Next, find the link for books on Chanukah at Amazon. Ask students how many Chanukah books Amazon sells. Instruct each student to select a book with a review from the list and save it to the disk. Click on the back button to return to the search results.
Next, find the Aish HaTorah site from the list of hits. Students will answer the questions on the Scavenger Hunt. Return to the search results.
Next, go to the Virtual Jerusalem site, "Virtual Jersualem Presents... Chanukah 1997: Kids Club". Students will save page one and two of the The Story of Chanukah to the disk and complete the questions/activities on the Scavenger Hunt.
The last site students will go to is www.zigzagworld.com/hh/ and create a picture. As students finish they should raise their hands to show you.
At the conclusion of the lesson and Scavenger Hunt, students will turn in their Scavenger Hunt and take home their disk to share the contents with their family.
Extensions of this lesson: Information saved on the disks may be used in the classroom at a later date. For example, students can write a book review of a Chanukah book similar to the review found at Amazon. Or, students can read The Story of Chanukah and rewrite as a poem or play.

Assessment

Scavenger hunts can be assessed for accuracy.
