Objective(s):
Students will define the poetry form, haiku. Students will write a haiku.
Summary
Students will learn about haikus using the Internet, and then they will write their own haikus.
Technology and/or Materials Needed
- Computers with Internet access
- Students should possess basic searching skills

Four 45-minute class periods
Activities
Day one: Begin by asking students if they have ever heard of a haiku. Explain to students how it is a form of poetry. Next, students will launch the Internet and search for sites on haikus. Students should find sites that will answer the following questions.
- What is a haiku poem?
- What kinds of haiku are there?
- Name two famous haiku poets.
- In what country did haiku originate?
Students will print out various pages with approval of teacher.
Day two: Put students in groups of four. Using the printed sheets from the previous day, summarize the research and answer the questions from the previous day in the summary. Next, bring students back together as a whole group and discuss each group's findings. Record important facts on overhead or black board. Engage in discussion of Japanese culture and the history of the haiku.
Day three: Review with students basic haiku facts: usually about nature, contain words that suggest a season, 3 lines, with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second line, and five syllables in the third line. Students will brainstorm a list of possible haiku topics (i.e. rock, deer, frost-covered leaf). Next, students will create a list of words associated with the seasons. Students will experiment by combining words from the list to create a haiku. Next, students should create a first draft of a haiku and follow through the writing process with a peer edit and final draft.
Day four: Students will present their final draft of the haiku. To close the unit, students can illustrate their haiku.
Assessment
Students final haiku and presentation will be evaluated based on originality and use of haiku form.
