Objective(s)

Students will use the Internet to find accurate and reliable resources.
Students will decide if Internet resources are valuable or not.

Summary

In an ongoing cross-curricular research project, students take some time examining Internet resources and determining if the information is helpful and fits into the research outline.

Technology and/or Materials Needed

  • Computers with Internet access
  • Research questions and outline

Implementation Time Frame

Three 45-minute class period

Activities

Begin with a discussion on the differences between using the Internet for pleasure and using the Internet for academic research. Engage in a discussion of taking the time with academic research to determine if the information on a site, or a potential link is helpful to the research question and outline.

Begin with all students at the site, www.refdesk.com. Point out different areas to the site: Fast Facts and Miscellaneous, providing access to almanacs, maps, experts, and more. Encourage students as they are searching for information and linking to other sites, to ask themselves, "Is this information helpful?" If yes, instruct students to save the site on a diskette, take notes, writing down the URL, and bookmark the site. If the information is not helpful, return to the refdesk.

Assessment

The final research will be assessed for writing and science content. The resources should also be evaluated for accuracy and relevance to the topic using a rubric.
