Summary
This lesson uses a webquest that was created by a teacher
and posted on the web. Webquests are lessons created for teachers
and students. Lesson plans are usually provided, and student
activities are clearly outlined utilizing the Web. Links are
provided which leads to safe searching by students, since URLs
are provided.
This lesson involves students searching for information on
volcanoes and earthquakes to determine which would be safer to
live near.
Technology and/or Materials Needed
- Computers with Internet access
- Word processing program, i.e. Microsoft Word
- Optional: Server in which to save group work
Implementation Time Frame
Two 45-minute class period
Activities
Students will be assigned to groups of four to complete this
activity. A leader should be chosen. The lesson will be introduced
with a brief explanation of webquests. Students should launch
the Internet and go to the provided webquest, Earthquake
vs. Volcano Website. The group leader should assign each
of the websites on the webquest to investigate. Before beginning
individual research, students should preview the seven questions
on volcanoes and the six questions on earthquakes. In gathering
research, each student should attempt to answer the questions.
They can take notes on paper or on the computer using a word
processing program.
After appropriate time for individual research, each group
should compile their information and make a decision on which
they would rather live near: earthquake or volcano. Each student
will write a paragraph justifying their group decision. Each
member of the group will save his/her on the server by clicking
on "file" then "save as". Save to the drive
assigned to the server and find or create a folder for the group
work. With or without the server, each members' work should be
compiled to present to the entire class.
Modification for one-computer classroom: Students can rotate
to access the webquest. When not working on the computer, students
can use other resources, such as encyclopedias. Students may
also work on their presentations to be presented on poster board.
The webquest may also be printed out, as well as information
from other websites for students to use when the computer is
not accessible.
Assessment
See the rubric provided in the webquest.
