Students will learn about French and Canadian Christmas traditions and compare and contrast them to American traditions.
Students will use English-French glossaries and dictionaries.
Students will learn to pronounce words from the related vocabulary list and use them, aloud, in sentences with the "like/dislike" expressions from the textbook.
Students will use the Internet to research Christmas traditions.

Students will research French and Canadian holiday traditions while learning new French vocabulary words.

Two 45-minute class period
Activities
At individual computers or students gathered around one computer, students will view the site Christmas Traditions. While viewing with the website, students will discuss some of the French traditions and the things they find interesting. Students will practice saying some of the new French words in combination with "J'aime" and Je n'aime pas." ("I like" and "I don't like".) Also, students will complete vocabulary list of words related to today's topic. We will review the list for meaning and pronunciation when the class finishes it.
Extensions: Students will write a brief essay (in English) in which they will discuss what interested them the most interested them the most. Students will add a ten-word list of related French vocabulary of their choice. Students will plan a holiday dinner menu. Using manila paper, crayons or markers, and paper plates, they will "create" the dinner, labelling all foods and utensils in French. "Dinners" will be displayed in the classroom.
Assessment
After additional practice, the students can be assessed on a speaking assignment in which they will tell the class, in French, their likes and dislikes with the foods they have learned.
