Java A programming language developed by SUN Microsystems that is used for a variety of features on web pages. Java is non-platform specific, therefore it works on all computer systems.

Applet An application running from within a web browser. A Java applet runs within a Java-capable browser, i.e.: Netscape or Internet Explorer.

CGI (Common Gateway Interface) A program that can provide a variety of functions. Used by Internet forms, guestbooks, counters.

Radio Button and Check Box A selection devices on an Internet form.

Clickable Image Map An image on a web page that has "hot spots" on it that, when clicked, take the user to another web page or web site.

mailto: HTML tag used to invoke an e-mail document.

Animated GIF A moving web graphic created by "stitching" together a series of GIF images.

Table A device used to fine tune web page layout. This spreadsheet-like tool uses cells to place items on a web page in a particular place or location.

Homepage The "welcome" or first page of a website.

Webpage A single HTML document.

Website A collection of related webpages served from the same site.

CGI A CGI is a small program that takes data from a web server and does something with it, like turning the data into a database query or content into an e-mail message.

GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) A common format for image files, especially suitable for images containing large areas of the same color.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) The coding language used to create Hypertext documents for use on the World Wide Web.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) JPEG is most commonly mentioned as a format for image files. JPEG format is preferred to the GIF format for photographic images.

Hypertext Text containing links to other documents -- words or phrases in the document that can be chosen by a reader causing another document to be retrieved and displayed.

Search Engine An internet tool that helps the user find specific information on the internet. Information is found by typing a search query or string.

Search Directory An internet tool that organizes information in broad categories a la the yellow pages.

Meta Engine A search engine that searches multiple search engines at one time.

Portal An "entry" to the internet that provides the user a way to access specific information via a consistent, organized interface.

Boolean Operators and Descriptors A method of refining a search query by combining or excluding terms through the use of plus or minus, and, or not.

ISP (Internet Service Provider) A company that provides other companies or individuals with access to, or presence on, the Internet.

Listserv One of the earliest types of e-mail discussion lists, and still in widespread use, although there are many other types now, too. The most common kind of mail list, Listervs originated in BITNET but are now common on the Internet. They are an automatic mailing service, which processes electronic mail requests for subscribing to or deletion from mailing lists. Listservs are forums that focus on specific topics. All are accessed via e-mail.

Browser Software that will load and display a webpage. The principal browsers are Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera, Mosaic, and the text-only Lynx. Application software that gives you a graphical interactive interface for searching, finding, viewing, and managing information over a network.
